In the game of poker, although it can be played in different ways, a few main principles remain common to all of the variants:
- Each player receives cards (which constitute the “hand” of the player), which are distributed face down or face up.
- The layout of the players is generally the same.
- The chips bet by the players constitute what is called the “pot”.
- At each betting round, players can bet to stay in the game. Otherwise, they pass their hand.
- When two players stay in the game until the end of the auction, the one with the best hand wins the pot.
What Are The Main Variants Of Poker?

- Hold’em Poker
Hold’em (or Texas Hold’em) is the most common form of poker. Each player receives two cards, which must not be visible to the other players. In total, we have four betting rounds.
- Omaha Poker
In Omaha, each player receives four hole cards. So, we also have four betting rounds. On the other hand, contrary to Hold’em, each player composes his hand of five cards by obligatorily combining his two closed cards with three cards of the table.
- Draw Poker
Unlike Hold’em and Omaha, Draw is closed poker. In this variant, each player receives five hole cards, after a first betting round. There is, therefore, no community card placed in the center of the table. The second round of betting takes place once the cards have been dealt with. Each player can then ask the dealer to replace up to four cards from their deck. After the third round of betting, the remaining players show their hands to the others, and the strongest combination wins the pot.
